Instructional Lab Policies

Edit me

This policy document governs the use of computer labs in Adams Hall rooms 202, 203, 204, 206, 208, and 019 and applies in addition to Hofstra’s Acceptable Use Policy.

Lab Access

  • At any time, a lab may be open, scheduled, or closed. During open hours, workstations in Adams 203 and 204 are available on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone with an account. During scheduled hours, workstations are available only to students in the course for which the lab is scheduled. Labs are available during closed hours only to those with a lab pass, which may be obtained from the department secretary.
  • Remote access to UNIX/Linux workstations in Adams 204 via ssh is allowed at all times.
  • Remote access to Windows machines is not allowed.

Food

Food and drinks are not allowed or strongly discouraged in all computer labs. It is your responsibility to leave work areas clean for the next user.

Account Use

You may not allow others to use your account. Sharing access to your account is strictly prohibited and violation of this policy may result in your account being suspended.

Disk Space

Currently, there is a quota of 1GB on all Linux lab accounts.

Backups and Restores

To counter the possibility of data loss, all Linux account files are backed up daily. If you inadvertently delete a file, it may be possible to restore it. Submit restore requests through the trouble web form or email cscadmins@hofstra.edu.

Reporting Problems

Use the trouble web form by following the Submit a request or report a problem link on our Help page.
