Software Downloads

This is a brief list of some essential software and resources you are likely to need in the course of your studies.

Hofstra students and faculty can download Microsoft software through Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching, formerly Microsoft Imagine/Dreamspark.
Students and faculty can download VMware products through the VMware Academic Program at Kivuto OnTheHub.
Visual Studio Professional can be downloaded through Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching or Visual Studio Community Edition can be downloaded from the Vistual Studio website. Please see How to install Visual Studio on Windows 10.
Students and faculty get a free Office 365 subscription, which allows you to install Microsoft Office on up to 5 PCs or Macs and Office apps on up to 5 tablets or phones. Office 365 includes Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Please see How to get Microsoft Office from the Hofstra Portal. Additional Office products (Microsoft Visio, Project, and Access) can be downloaded through Microsoft Imagine.
Unity Pro is installed on lab computers in Adams 206. For your own computer, you can download and install Unity Personal for free.
VirtualBox is used to run virtual machines on your computer. VirtualBox is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Please see our installation directions for Windows and for Mac.
Cygwin is a collection of Unix-like utilities ported to Windows, including a Unix-like terminal emulator and essential command-line programs. Please follow the Cygwin installation guide.
Notepad++ is a free text editor for Windows with syntax highlighting support for several programming languages.
The VMware Remote Console is used to access the graphical console of virtual machines in the Big Data Lab. The download requires creating and logging in with a VMware account.
NetBeans is a popular IDE for Java development. For CSC 016, download NetBeans with Java SE.
7zip is a robust decompression utility for Windows that supports more archive formats and features than the Windows builtin zip utility.
Eclipse IDE is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. There are several download options with different tools prepackaged; however, you can install the features from any package into any other package. You may choose the Eclipse installer or one of the zip packages. If you download a zip package, use 7zip to decompress it on Windows. Please note that Eclipse requires the full JDK to be installed on Mac, not just the JRE.
Current students can download and use MATLAB, Simulink, and add-on products on personal computers through Hofstra's MathWorks Total Student Headcount (TSH) license. Please see How to install MATLAB.
Alice is a 3D animation program used in CSC 006.
App Inventor is a platform for creating Android Apps that is used in CSC 005.
Pygame is a Python module for writing simple video games and graphical programs. Please see How to Install Pygame.
R is a free, open source programming language for statistical analytics. RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE) for R that includes a console, syntax-highlighting editor, and tools for plotting, history, debugging, and workspace management. You must install R before you can install RStudio.
