What should I do to set up my paths permanently?

A: Depends on which shell you are using, you can set up or edit your paths permanently with the following:

bullet

 For ksh, bash or sh, edit the profile file (~/.profile) with:

PATH=/bin:/usr/local/jdk1.5.0/bin:/usr/local/jdk1.5.0/lib:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/bin/i686-pc-linux-gnu/:/usr/sbin
export PATH

bullet

For C shell (csh) edit the startup file (~/.cshrc) with:

setenv PATH /bin:/usr/local/jdk1.5.0/bin:/usr/local/jdk1.5.0/lib:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/bin/i686-pc-linux-gnu/:/usr/sbin
